Egypt: Behind Walls

For Europeans, Egypt is the home of the oriental, for the Islamic world it is the centre of religion. The Al-Azhar University, which has been standing for 1100 years, has educated some of the most acclaimed scholars in the world. Egypt also has the most celebrated Koran readers. It is the cultural centre of the Arab world, this is where the Arab world goes for cinema, art and music - many Arabs travel to Egypt to experience things that are prohibited in their own countries. Egypt has introduced the modern Arab Muslim women’s identity to the world and is where the first Muslim women’s movement took root.
